In this 45 minute video, I show how to paint shadows and light in pastel, with a focus on color selection. This landscape painting depicts the Sonoma coast near Jenner, just north of the Russian River estuary.
Thank you to filmmaker Matthew Fabiano for filming, editing and producing the video. Thanks to Jerry Fabiano for facilitating. This video was made as a demo for my friends at the Artist Workshop of Sonoma County (AWS). Their website is https://www.awsomeart.org/

The range of moods that are manifested by the natural world is incredibly varied. I try to capture a sense of these fleeting moments, the time of day, the time of year. I want the viewer of my art to feel how the sun warms the rocks on a bright, clear morning, and to feel the cool bite in the air as the fog starts to descend in late afternoon. I love to delve into the mysterious interplay of shadows and sunlight. Mostly I strive to express my love and appreciation of nature in all my work.
The time I spend exploring the outdoors is very intense. I feel whole, completely at one when I walk in nature. This sense of unity is a core value that I want my work to express - a sense of wholeness - that all the pieces relate with one another in a joyful flow, that the fragmented way we normally see is actually an illusion. When I paint, I can almost believe I have the power to remake the world, to move beyond dualism, isolation and separateness.
Interestingly, insights in modern science continue to confirm this notion, that we are all deeply connected. Our intuition that there is a body/mind split is simply not accurate. The belief that there is a race that is superior to the rest is nonsense. The fallacy that humans are not cousins of all the rest of the biology around us is untenable and even dangerous. Very slowly, older ideas, mainly from the far east, are finding resonance in the west, and not a moment too soon.
Note: Let me know if a special commissioned painting would interest you.
